Hopi Butterfly Quilt Block

Materials:

fabric
tracing paper
iron-on tracing pencil
fine line permanent marker
fabric paints
butterfly design or design of choice

Steps:

  1. Draw a butterfly design template (figure A). Mark a "b" (for black paint) in areas to be painted black (for step five). Use this template as a guide for painting and marking.

  2. Trace a basic outline of the butterfly design (figure B) on tracing paper.

    Fill in the design using an iron-on tracing pencil (figure C). Guest added additional detailing in step five using the black fabric paint.

  3. Transfer the tracing paper butterfly design by placing the design right side down on the fabric block and iron (figure D).

  4. Highlight or outline the butterfly design details using a fine line permanent marker on the fabric (figure E).

  5. Paint the butterfly design with black fabric paint embellishing the design with symbols, lines or markings as desired (figure F).

  6. Add two-inch sashing to the block edges (figure G).

     

  7. Complete the desired number of quilt blocks to complete the quilt.
